Allorra! A Christmas Eve note da Venezia

A visitor was looking out her hotel window,
to see the sights the morning brings to view.
The dawning sun on the new fallen snow
Gave a luster to Venezia and the objects below.

And what to her wondering eye should appear,
but a sandolo moving south on the Grand Canale
with a little old oarsman so lively and quick,
that she knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

Flying past the Salute on the way to St. Mark,
eager to get a capucinno at the piazzetta,
Scouting the routes to the kids before it gets dark.
She heard him exclaim, before he got out of sight,

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good flight!

Many thanks to KdeS and CCM

  1. Mr. Foster, this is also the season of high waters. The media don't seem to know anything about Venice but P S Marco. Please report what campi are affected by the various heights, How high is Margherita? How high before the vaporettos are affected and which ones? Where can't you get off the vaporetto without wading?
I have seen 130 predicted. It should be interesting.

  2. M. Mueden, Basically, I stayed inside today. It was raining, and a 10:30 acqua alta alarm...But last night in the wee hours the water rose 143-144cm above normal. Not too many people on the vaporettos at 2-3AM, but even with the floating landing stations, it is difficult. That height is above the basic boot (knee high). There was a strong SE breeze, plus a stronger than normal tide. As for Christmas Day, I will be out throughout the day, and will make a report.
